René Magritte

He was born at Lessines (Hainaut province, Wallonia) on 21st November 1898 and died in Brussels on 15th August 1967.

He was a founder of the Surrealist group of artists, and one of his most famous paintings depicts a pipe with "Ceci n’est pas une pipe" ("This is not a pipe") written underneath.

Three of his other paintings depict scenes from his childhood in Lessines: a chest next to his cradle, the removal of a crashed airship from the roof of his family’s house, and a self-portrait in the cemetery.

He retained his quirky taste for mystery and contrast throughout his long career.
