King Pepin the Short

King of the Franks (714-768 AD)

King Pepin the Short was born in Jupille (near Liège) and was one of the three legitimate sons of Charles the Hammer. He was left the province of Austrasia on his father’s death, but took over another when his brother became a monk, and defeated his half- brother in battle and deposed the enfeebled Merovingian King Childeric to become King of the Franks in 748. He expanded Frankish territory to include Bavaria, Southern France and Aquitaine, driving the Moors back over the Pyrenees into Spain. He died while preparing to fight the Saxons, and was buried at St Denis near Paris, establishing a tradition for future Kings of France. He transformed the Carolingian de jure supremacy into a de facto supremacy which was to last for a hundred years, and laid the foundations for the rise of his son, Charlemagne.
