King Clovis I

The first King of the Franks (c. 466 – 511 AD)

King Clovis I was born near Tournai (in modern-day Belgium). Through a series of successful wars against neighbouring Frankish tribes, he united Frankish-controlled territory into a single kingdom around 509AD. At the instigation of his wife, Clotilda of Burgundy, Clovis was baptised a Roman Catholic by St Remigius at Rhiems Cathedral, where his successors would be crowned Kings of France. At his death, his kingdom had roughly the same borders as modern-day France. He was the first of the Merovingian dynasty, that went on to rule the Franks for 200 years.
