Nicolas Bovesse

 Designer

Having worked as a stagiaire for the Parisian designers Radi and Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Nicolas Bovesse returned to Brussels and set up his own design research studio. His work is characterised by his willingness to give meaning to objects. This informs his research and often leads him to set aside stereotypes to question the underlying basic human need. Behind his refined lines and graphics hide signs of his careful dissection of contemporary society. Each of his creations is the fruit of much research into form, shape, function, history and time. The huge table in his studio is a jumble of prototypes, models, drawings, plans and samples, waiting to be blended into new creations. His studio bubbles with ideas. Scenarios are written, a concept emerges, a shape sees the light of day and a new object is born.

Nicolas Bovesse’s diversified approach to design leads him to constantly wander between mass production and one-off creations. For him, design is an endless series of meetings between different disciplines (art, craft and industry). Creating an object is the result of a sort of complex alchemy, the meeting of several minds, each of which stimulates him and influences future designs. In this way, he has just developed a range of hand-turned pottery containers with the potter Claude Aïello, who is based at Vallauris in France, whose virtuosity can transform “a lump of earth into an imagined object”.
