The slopes of the citadel

A stone’s throw from the Place Saint-Lambert, the slopes of the citadel rise above the city of Liège. With their 86 hectares of greenery, gardens, terraces and paths, they constitute a huge green space a few minutes’ walk from the city centre.

The slopes are home to more than 60 historic monuments and five listed sites, and bear witness to the long history of Liège. Visitors can explore the spectacular flights of steps on “Buren’s mountain” and climb them to experience the magnificent panoramic views from the Citadel Park at the top.

There are five way marked footpaths of various lengths starting from either the Esplanade Saint-Léonard or from outside number 38, Rue Pierreuse.

An illustrated map and guide to these footpaths is available from the tourist information centres in Liège.

Annual Event: Slopes of the Citadel Night -
first Saturday in October

A date for your diary that is not to be missed: a magical walk through the alleyways, flights of steps, terraces, gardens, paths and orchards of the slopes of the citadel, close to the historic heart of Liège. This event is held every year on the first Saturday in October, and attracts many visitors from abroad, as it has become the major festival of lights in the region, part of the new concept of Liège, city of light. During the event, more than 20,000 candles, searchlights, fairy lights and flaming torches are lit along the route of the walk.
