Old Bill - Bruce Bairnsfather
The Old Bill character was created by British illustrator Lieutenant Bruce Bairnsfather when he served with the first Royal Warwickshire battalion in Belgium, around the Plugstreet sector battlefield, during the winter 1914-1915. The caricatures of Old bill came to fame and boosted the morale of the British troops during the Great War. Old Bill is shown as a quaint character, with gruff appearance and a big Moustache. He first appeared in a London Newspapers in 1915. He quickly became a familiar character, who still today, attracts the attention of numerous enthusiast and collectors.
Lieutenant Bruce Bairnsfather also witnessed the 1914 Christmas Truce in the hamlet of St Yves, nearby Ploegsteert Wood, in the municipality of Comines-Warneton.
